Chapter 22

David had sealed the maps, telegram and notes in an envelope, and deposited them in the hotel’s safe.

It was too cold to snow, and the road surfaces on the major roads were frozen and treacherous as they drove over the bridge to the other side of the river and the motorway to the north and Nolvik.

The forest on the minor road thinned a little, and Christina recognised that the villa was quite close. After another two kilometres, they saw a red Volvo in the headlights, parked on a forest track to the left.

‘That’s the car.’ David slowed down and then backed up. The vehicle was empty. He reversed a little more, both of them looking around carefully on both sides of the road.

‘David, go back three hundred metres, and park. Then we’ll have a look.’ She craned her neck around to check behind the car.

They got out, closing the doors as quietly as possible, putting the silencers on their Glocks and checking the magazines. They stood for some minutes listening and getting used to the dark. Everything seemed quiet, so they started to walk down the road to the Volvo.

Christina took one side, walking fifty metres behind him. The car was unlocked, and the contents of the glove compartment had been strewn about in the passenger floor-well and seat. He used the mini-torch to look around.

‘These are papers for the car, registered here in Gothenburg to the police department,’ he said, as she caught up with him.

‘David, there are some tracks in the snow that lead away, and over those some tracks leading to and from the car. There’s been a lot of activity here.’

‘I don’t like this, Christina. Thank God there’s a fair bit of moonlight.’ He peered into the darkness of the forest ahead. ‘I can see some lights, is that the villa?’ he asked, as he heard Christina stumble and curse in the gloom behind him.

‘Yes, straight ahead, three hundred metres. There’s a field of four hectares, between the edge of the trees and the main building.’

David raised his hand in a stop gesture. He whispered, indicating direction with his head.

‘I can hear something moving in front of us.’ They both stood motionless, craning their heads to one side to catch any noise.

A warm animal scent drifted from the trees, and the soft whinny of a horse, close by, broke the silence as it sensed their presence. They waited a few more seconds before making towards the lights of the house, and on reaching the end of the trees they saw the villa, one hundred and fifty metres across the field.

Four horses, three of which were on the far side, were out in the snow covered paddock, which David found strange as it was so cold. The nearest horse saw them, shook its head, snorted, and ambled slowly over to the others.

He knew that anyone with a night-sight would pick them off easily.

‘If I make it to the other side without incident, you follow me, okay? As you said, let’s do this properly.
